    I won't say perfection, but like 'Hostiles', the time to explain the tribes wiping out the settlers grounds everything else. Anyone who saw the survivors now knows about it, the military knows about it, and they call for a icy, blood soaked bastard who won't lose, braves not with standing. And then a deep look at the flaws of dependency in the covered Wagon trails. The infighting. And then Costner's cowboy sneaking into their lives. There were 16 happy viewers in my theater.

    A lot of folks continue to discredit Tobe Hooper for his work on "Poltergeist" because the movie to them is very "Spielbergian." But it's funny how nobody ever makes the claim that Spielberg directed "Gremlins," "Back to the Future," "The Goonies," or "Arachnophobia," which all arguably have that same Spielberg feel.

      Well, they built and developed the film from scratch together. They wrote the treatment together, they essentially wrote the final script together. They went into it knowing this was a huge production with as many special effects as something like STAR WARS, and it was not going to be a one-man job. They creatively collaborated because Hooper always likes to garner new ideas and shoot with a spontaneous spirit by having his writers on the set. That said, Hooper directed and Spielberg’s attentions were split between this film and preparing E.T. There’s no way he was doing all the prep and homework for each day of shooting the wayHopper was.

      It’s a collaboration, for sure, the way the Indiana Jones films are both Spielberg’s and Lucas’s (especially number 4 😅). But directing is about labor, and Hooper was certainly the one who put the hours in both on set and at home planning the next day, so there really was no need for the decades of rumors saying “Hooper sat on his butt/took drugs all day/was full of bad ideas” other than pure, malicious gossip and sycophancy.

  • @billg3356

    I just commented on this exact topic on another channel not five minutes ago. Tobe was a talented director, but Poltergeist has Spielberg written all over it.

    • @decalfacilitators463
      @decalfacilitators463 День назад

      I don’t know, the film moves at a much more relaxed and languid pace than Spielberg’s other works, with a unique attention to the image and atmosphere. Spielberg, even in his “slow scenes,” is always trying to force a propulsive narrative down your throat. In POLTERGEIST, there’s only a distant, almost documentary-like regard of the family for a lot of the film. The emotions also get far more fervent and raw - like the She went through my soul moment - than Spielberg ever really cares to attain. Even the tearjerker finale of E.T., you can see the acting. Hooper was all about pushing actors to a point where acting seems immaterial.

    • @Lexy-O
      @Lexy-O День назад

      Hooper directed it but emulated Spielberg

    • @billg3356
      @billg3356 День назад

      @@decalfacilitators463 I like your take, man. But I disagree about Spielberg's pacing. Sugarland Express and Close Encounters are both fairly slow-paced films. Even JAWS takes long moments to breathe between set pieces. I love Texas Chainsaw and Salem's Lot, but I think Tobe might've been more of a 1st AD. In any case, Poltergeist is a great film, and a bonafide 80s classic.

    • @decalfacilitators463
      @decalfacilitators463 20 часов назад

      @@billg3356 Yeah, but it’s always cutesy, character developing moments. When Hooper slows down, it’s pure atmosphere. Well, the actors didn’t consider him a first AD, they saw him as a director. And in the often times when Spielberg wasn’t present, he was all they had, removing such lines as “This place has got jaws!,” “I don’t need a vacation… I just need some sleep!” and other Spielberg bangers. If my 1st AD is rewriting the script and telling actors what to and not to say, I am firing that 1st AD.

  • @nathanmerritt9496

    I think it's obvious who actually directed it by the quality of the Movie. No disrespect to Tobe but it wasn't his Movie. It was Spielberg doing the Heavy Lifting for sure.

    • @decalfacilitators463
      @decalfacilitators463 День назад

      According to most people on the set, it was Hooper who did the heavy lifting. Spielberg was absent large chunks of the time because he was busy preparing to shoot E.T. You don’t direct a film by proxy. Plus, you can find many people on the internet calling POLTERGEIST slow, badly written, lacking character development, and boring. If Hooper just followed Spielberg’s script to the T, you wouldn’t have these criticisms - his script is full of extra jokes and cute moments! Spielberg would have also not spent thirty seconds on shots just watching people sleep or take a bath. Hooper excised the fun stuff judiciously and added pure atmosphere, so what we have is something that doesn’t quite feel like a Spielberg film in terms of energy and slickness. What Hooper got was a budget and inspiration from a good producer - as Block says. But heavy lifting? Spielberg did none of that. Hooper worked for half a year on pre-production, according to an actor, while Spielberg was out making deals on E.T. Blood, sweat, and tears? Not Spielberg’s, it’s Hooper’s, yet people wanted to strip him of his clear and corroborable work for years.
